Gay Rights
As a socially progressive citizen, Anurag recognizes and fully supports gay rights and equality. Gender and sexuality has no basis as being something that the rest of society defines for an individual; rather, it is one of the most innate traits of oneself. Marching as an ally in the annual Pride Parade in Madison every year since 2003, Anurag is a fervent supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and supports policies such as gay marriage and non-denial of business due to religious beliefs, which is little more a thin veil for discrimination.
Drug Policy
It is excruciatingly clear that the nation’s current approach to drugs does not work. Irresponsibly expensive and fostering a culture of legal subversion, the decriminalization of marijuana - which is in many ways less dangerous than alcohol, being nearly impossible to overdose on and not leading to poisoning - is clear step that this country can and should take, leaving individual states to experiment and strike a balance of values that works for them. Far too many people’s lives have been destroyed by the reactionist policy that our country has employed, at home and abroad. Decriminalizing the drug would also help stabilize neighboring countries to the South by depriving the drug rings there of cash, thus helping to ease the burden of immigration. More and more Americans are reaching this conclusion and polling shows support for legalizing cannabis at 60%
Second Amendment
Finally, the Constitution expressly creates the right to bear arms. Attempts to subvert and weaken this fundamental human right set a dangerous precedent of avoiding tough constitutional questions and dancing around the meaning of the Bill of Rights whenever it becomes politically convenient. Thus, Anurag is a an enthusiastic supporter of Second Amendment rights, strongly opposing restrictive regulations that some want placed on bearing arms. It should be also be noted that many of the statistics touted by fanatic partisans have been proven false, leaving their unconstitutional claims on weak foundations,
Power to the States
If the federal government could wave a magic wand and fix all of the nation’s problems, we would not need state and local governments, but the issues which face us are nuanced and do not have a simple answer. Our founding fathers recognized this, and gave individual states a lot of power to solve their own problems, using uniquely tailored methodology. Recently, however, the federal government has overstepped its bounds, and tried to use a hatchet where a scalpel is needed, pouring money into ill-conceived education, transportation, and law-enforcement projects. Each jurisdiction knows what it needs to fix its own problems, and the federal government’s role should be to provide the money and expertise required to see that the solutions are carried out. Anurag would cut back on red-tape bureaucracy which limits state power, while turning more federal projects into block grants, to ensure that resources go where they are needed, not where Washington suits think they should go.
